Hitting the road

Guess who got her Learner's Permit?

What a right of passage. What a big day! Emily called me at work to tell me the great news. She said, when you get home from work, don't even turn off the car; I don't care if you're hungry or tired, we're going driving. I said, what about driving with your dad? She reminded me he drives a stick-shift. I said, why don't you two come to my work and borrow my car? She thought about it for 1 second and said, BYE! They came right over and were gone for hours. She clocked 45 miles on my car. I don't quite agree with all the driving she did, but... She was ready at the door when I got home from work at 8:00. I was tired and hungry, but no complaints from me. She did a lot of parking, driving in our neighborhood, and a very short distance on a main road. There was only one scary moment. I think she's going to be a good driver. I foresee a lot of car time in my future.

Happy day!

Congratulations to E.! It was SO weird for me when Little Girl started driving. But, I am happy to report, she drives like a "grandma" and I couldn't be happier!

My nephew, on the other hand, drives like a psychotic 16 year old BOY!

It will get easier to deal with E. driving as time goes along. I love to send Little Girl to run errands that I don't particularly want to do...that's when it's GREAT that she has her license! Ooops, I need one Granny Smith Apple from the grocery..."Oh, Little Giiiiiiiiiirl...". I really need to get the prescriptions picked up, but I'm having way more fun reading the blogs...."Hey teenage driver..." Wow, my tummy is growling but I'm trapped at work grading papers with no end in sight..."Hey, do you want to go grab some lunch and come eat with me?".

These are all good things. :)

My daughter and grandson are doing this too.

Ah, too bad Emily doesn't want to drive stick. Once you learn that you can drive anything. I made my kids learn on stick and today they thank me.

I remember the first day my son drove. I had a tissue torn to shreds and we were only a block away from home!!

What fun! - I just remembered how it felt when I got my driver license. Back when we actually looked forward to birthdays!

Great news! The hardest part was watching them drive off alone for the very first time. I can still remember how I felt and which window I was looking out of as he pulled out of the drive way that very first time without one of us in the car.

As nerve wracking as it may be, lots of seat time is a good thing.

My son (who turns 16 in a week) refuses to drive. After he got his permit I basically forced him to drive to a local store. We are talking 3 miles tops.

Since then, he refuses to get behind the wheel. I keep telling him he can't get his license until he logs 100 hours behind the wheel with his permit. Maybe he is counting on him mother to take him to the DMV. Either way, your Emily is doing what's best.
