28 January 2008

I wish it were earlier in the day. I'm not ready to say good-bye to my weekend. Two more hours before bedtime, and I know that time's gonna fly. I shouldn't be complaining as it's been a 3 day weekend for me. I got an early start today and headed out to visit with my mom. We went to lunch at one of our favorite Chinese restaurants and were the first customers at 11:00. One good thing about eating so early is you're not too full for dinner at night. I had Crispy Shrimp, rice and broccoli with a starter of Hot and Sour soup. We ran a few errands, then watched some TV on that serious HDTV I've mentioned before. I want one soooooo bad. That will actually segue me to the next topic. Did I spell that right? Electronics. I've wanted more memory for my laptop. From what I understand, memory is like a highway. The bigger the road, the more room cars have to whiz by. I want my computer to go faster. My neighbor and I researched what I needed on the net, and I ordered 1G of RAM from TigerDirect. Guess we messed up because I got desktop memory. I packaged that up and paid shipping and insurance to send it back today. Then I bought what I thought was the right kind from Staples. No, it's slightly off and won't fit. Finally I called Dell, and got the right part number, but the lowest price is more than I want to pay. So, I'll forget about it. I do need to find some way to speed things up. It's fast enough when I'm online, but getting to My Pictures takes forever. I think finding and deleting the videos I've stored will help. I hope. And then there's the TV thing. What does a person actually need in a HDTV? Why are there so many prices for the same size? 1080p or 1080i or 720p or 720i? How many inputs, etc, etc, etc...How does a person make a decision? It's just too confusing. And that's my story on that.

Em asked why I haven't talked about the break up with her boyfriend. I don't know if it will last, and I didn't want to invade her privacy. She said I talk about everything, and it's my blog. Well, it is my blog but I don't talk about everything. I'm very sad for Emily. No parent wants to see their child in pain. Emily has reached out to me, and I have happily been at her beck and call. It was good to have such a busy Saturday and Sunday to help keep her distracted. We have spent serious time together in perfect harmony. Today we even took turns reading 'Eat Pray Love' aloud. (I finally finished the Pray part. I disliked it SO much.) She's upstairs now, on the phone with friends. That's good. The new semester started today. Pre-season training for softball will start soon. New beginnings.

I haven't been on the computer as much as usual. I apologize for not stopping by your blogs as often as I'd like. If I haven't said hi, it's only cause I'm busy, not because I don't care.

Have I mentioned the fabulous Inn I'm going to next Sunday? I'll save that for another day.

Time to get back to the book. Till the next time...

When I get impatient about response time on my curent pc - I laugh at myself remembering that's i'm of an age that endured baud rates of 1200 back in the day. I Hope Em's heart heals soon !

Cheryl,

You need what are called SODIMMS for your laptop and I bet yours are DDR. I wished I lived closer and could help you in person. Also, defrag that harddrive if you haven't done it in a while. A defrag program is built into Windows XP and you will probably have to let it run all night to finish. Hope this helps some. A new hard drive would speed up your computer probably more than memory. The harddrive is always the bottleneck in systems I have used. I have two 10,000 rpm Raptor drives in RAID 0 for speedy access. I bet your notebook harddrive spins at only 5400 rpm.

Okay, Andrew, you're hired for my pc too, but I don't understand what language that was!!! :)

Cheryl, You are a great mother, and Em a great daughter, all I can say is you both are so lucky to have each other!!!
Sorry to hear about the breakup...it's painful, but it does teach us so much about ourselves..later on naturally.
Enjoy the last hour or two of your fabulous weekend!

your friend,
Elizabeth

Young love is tragic. It can hurt like no other. Emily, I'm so sorry. Time will heal, though, and one day you'll see a face in the crowd that makes this all go away.

I've given up trying to understand the electronic lingo. So far as I'm concerned it's just a jumbled maze. If/When we have to buy a television, we'll just call in the boys and stand out of the way.

For Em,

I wanted to add that my girlfriend broke up with me a week before my Jr. prom. I stayed home and cried on the bed the night of the prom. My mother sat on the bed and held me for what seemed like hours telling me to hush and be quiet, and that it was going to be okay. And you know what? Time heals wounds and soon I was dating again and started a relationship that lasted throughout my senior year. Lean on your mom. She has been there and can help you. I hope the hurt lessens soon.

The biggest problem with name brand laptops is the proprietary parts that cost more than the generic. Laptop parts are more expensive anyway, but when it's a name brand it's even worse. Well, actually a Mac is way worse, but you don't have to worry about that!

The next laptop I get is going to be custom built by a local guy so I can go to him to get it upgraded when I need to. No calling customer service half-way across the world either.

I have missed you my friend.

I am glad Em has reached out to you and hope her heart heals soon. Breakups, at any age, suck.

I am with you on not knowing what to get. There are entirely too many choices out there. With any electronic.

Oh, and I might have to break the book out of my travel briefcase/backpack. It is the book I read when I am on a plane.

Since I have not been flying the friendly skies lately, I have not gotten that far into the book. Couple of weeks from now I will be though. Your journey through the book has me wondering if I should just knock it out now.

hi Cheryl, i'm sorry about your daughter's break-up and the pain behind it. love at any age isn't easy, and i do hope she'll feel better real soon.

i want to read that book. not quite sure what it's about, but i remember when i first heard about it, i wanted to read it. why did you not like the "pray" part?

some places do your computer memory, etc upgrades. you take your computer in and they'll do it. staples does it, i know, and sometimes there are computer places around town. there's a computer/internet cafe place in Lake Arbor (Largo) that does that.

I'm sorry to hear that Emily is hurting. Breaking up is never easy. I'm glad she has you to lean on...and that she's willing to let you share so much of her life with all of us.

I remember that pain that Emily is feeling. I'm sorry that she has to endure it.

I think Andrew needs to come up north and work on our computers.

And...don't aplogize for being busy. That's a good thing!

They broke up??? Holy crap. So sorry to hear. He was such a cutie, too. No worries, though. Emily is a little heart breaker with that beauty, so his loss!

Hope you are having a great week!

Oh electronics - way too complicated and way too many choices!!
Sorry to hear about Emily's breakup. :-(
It is hard to see your kids hurting, you just want to protect them but you just can't all the time.

I still want to read that book - the fact that everyone I know disliked the Pray part makes me want to read it more. But I'm weird that way.

Em, I'm so sorry about your boyfriend. I wondered if that was what was going on. I know it hurts - I still think about my first boyfriend from high school and wonder what he's doing. I hope you feel better soon.

lovins,
fiwa

Sorry about your DD's bf. High school romance was always so tough. Broken hearts will mend but at the time, it seems like they never will.

I hate to see the end of a weekend, even if it's 4 or 5 days long!!

I'm sorry for Emily. It is a hard time.

Hope you have lots of fun at the inn. Any sort of getaway has got to be a good time!

What! Softball! Is Em going to play SOFTBALL? We must talk. If I had just broken up with a boyfriend, I would not have been distracted from my moping by any wedding. She is a good strong girl. So you got through "Pray," did you? That was the toughest part of that book. Love was cool. I think you'll like it.

are you getting my emails ?
