Can someone please tell me where the summer went? Was it really that long ago that I was putting down compost and planting my flowers? The pear tree was covered with thousands of white, billowy blossoms. I was just growing my grass! Now I'm pulling out plants that have bloomed their final blooms. The pear tree is full of thousands of berries that will turn soft and start falling and cover my sidewalk with goo. My hummingbirds will be migrating in just a few short weeks. That might make me saddest of all.

It's not that it's getting cool here. It's just that school has started, and I know that in a blink of the eye it will be Christmas. I was supposed to start making my cards in July!

I visited my sister today. She's doing really well and will start light-duty part-time work starting on Thursday. Sixteen days after surgery. I find that amazing. She's a Type-A personality, and staying home is driving her stir-crazy. How's that for some hyphens?

I spent hours in the kitchen today. Made my now-famous zucchini pie. Shrimp salad. Lunches for the next two days of work. I marinated chicken thighs-they're such a pain to trim (I like to take off all the fat and other stringy stuff). It felt good to be preparing fresh food, but it's so time consuming. When I was finally done, I laid on my hammock. It was the first time and very pleasant till the mosquitoes found me. Oh well. It was time to light the grill anyway. Emily and I sat down for a good dinner of grilled chicken, green beans and garlic, macaroni and cheese and salad. Yum. I went outside and decided to mow the lawn. That done, I applied some bug spray, plugged in my fan and laptop, and, here I am. It's dusk, the crickets are chirping. I wish I could stay out for hours. I'm just thankful I had a little while to sit in my old favorite place. Like old times.

Sounds like a busy, but heavenly day. Summer did go by fast--I've been mosing around my garden, too, still shocked that everything I planted actually bloomed. I'm sorry to see them go, but it just means I get to do it again next year. Glad to hear your sister is making a speedy recovery!

I feel the same about it. Since it rained half the summer, I'm here thinking What? You're going already?

I awoke today and found the frost perched on the town
It hovered in a frozen sky, then it gobbled summer down
When the sun turns traitor cold
And shivering trees are standing in a naked row
I get the urge for going but I never seem to go

I get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in

I had me a woman in summertime
She had summer-colored skin
And not another guy in town
My darling's heart could win
But when the leaves fell trembling down
Bully winds did rub their faces in the snow
He got the urge for going And I had to let him go

She got the urge for going
When the meadow grass was turning brown
Summertime was falling down and winter was closing in

The warriors of winter they gave a cold triumphant shout
And all that stays is dying and all that lives is getting out
See the geese in chevron flight flapping and racing on before the snow
They've got the urge for going, they've got the wings to go

They get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in

I'll ply the fire with kindling and pull the blankets to my chin
And I'll lock the vagrant winter out and bolt my wandering in
I'd like to call back summertime and have her stay jut another month or so
She's got the urge for going and I guess she'll have to go

And she get the urge for going when meadow grass is turning brown
All her empires are falling down
Winter's closing in

Thanks Cheryl, I like reading your blog too.
You had quite a busy day and yes summer sure did go by fast. I like fall though and look forward to some nice cool brisk morning walks.

I'm kinda ready for summer to be over, myself. I say that now, but in a few months I will be moaning about rain. ;)

Your zucchni pie sounds yum - sometime will you share the recipe??

I was just thinking about that the other day..how fast the summer's gone by. Do you think it goes by faster the older your daughter gets?
I'm noticing my orangie (our squirrel..most likely a distant relative from your backyard cousins!!) busy working..not hanging out on our gutters.

Sigh..I'm glad you got to relax a bit, and I hope that you're not too bite up from those nasty buggers..YUCK!!

Hummingbirds..I've always wanted to get into them, have the feeders and so forth, but I know nothing about that sort of thing..

and one more thing, :) I loved how you described the pear tree..I'm picturing spring already for you in your yard..course, that would mean that you're truly behind on your Christmas Cards.

Many well wishes to your sis-I understand her pain with being cooped up!! :)

Always,
Crusty~:)

It seems as though we didn't really have a summer this year...how can it be gone already?

Emily looks adorable in her first day of school outfit. We don't start until next week.

And happy belated 300th!
